It's official, Wellington is perhaps the least Christmasy place on Earth (well at least second to Kabul). I'm not criticizing the place, they really have tried, but I think because the setting is so wrong the token Christmas decorations just seem completely out of place.
For example the sun is out most of the time, meaning it is actually light during the day, and its warm. People are wearing shorts out of necessity, not to prove a macho point. There are leaves on trees, things are in bloom.
In such conditions Christmas trees and Santas look like ironic jokes. There is nothing Christmasy about a six foot Maori man in shorts, sunglasses, and a Santa hat.
Last night the Sally Army was going the round the streets playing carols and collecting donations, pretty Christmasy right? Wrong. It seemed more like they were just canvasing for donations and had chosen Christmas songs due to a limited repertoire.
It was this morning that I realized that the popular Christmas song 'Do They Know It's Christmas Time' is actually about New Zealand. Here's to them underneath that burning sun.
